A part of having your bat mitzvah is doing a mitzvah project. I, like many people, am connecting my mitzvah project to my parshah, the part of the Torah I will be reading from. My parsha is parshat Beshalach, which tells the story of the Israelites escaping Egypt. Reflecting on this parsha in a modern context I see it as about people fleeing oppression and seeking refuge.
For my mitzvah project I am raising money to support refugees and immigrants seeking asylum in the US and beyond. I have been making earrings and other pieces of jewelry, and I first sold them at a Jewish craft bazaar in DC called Pushcart Judaica. This venture's name is Beloved Fruit, and you can also find pictures of my jewelry on Instagram at @BelovedFruit2024.
If you would like to purchase these products and support this mitzvah project please email me at belovedfruit2024@gmail.com and I can share more photos and info.
About the name: Beloved Fruit
My name, Priya means "Beloved" in Sanskrit, and in Hebrew Pri-ya means "Fruit of God". I thought that naming this jewelry venture Beloved Fruit was a good way to combine my South Indian and Ashkenazi heritage together for my Bat Mitzvah project.
